Your questions

Frequently asked questions

Another question? Call (514) 648-8487 and a person will answer, Monday to Friday.

How long does it take to start a trucking business?

About three weeks when everything goes through the same office. The actual timeline depends mostly on financing approvals and how quickly your personal documents are available.

What is the NIR and why do I need it?

It is the identification number in the Registre des propriétaires et des exploitants de véhicules lourds, kept by the Commission des transports du Québec. Anyone who puts a heavy vehicle on the road or operates one in Quebec must be registered. The registration must be updated every year to remain valid.

Is the Bill 430 training mandatory?

The Act respecting owners, operators and drivers of heavy vehicles sets specific obligations for hours of service, pre-trip inspections and keeping the business file. The training covers each of them, along with the records to keep.

Can I finance my first truck with no business history?

Yes, it is a common case. The choice of lender matters more than elsewhere, and that is where our support helps. J. Lavoie Finance works with a wide range of lenders.

Do I need to incorporate, or is a registration enough?

Both exist, and the choice depends on your tax situation, your contracts and your level of risk. We discuss it at the start of the file, and the chosen option is included in the package.
